What defines our generation? Easily the one defining feature of our culture that has altered our generation from previous is technology. Technology has redefined the world and how we interact. How we communicate with other is drastically different. We no longer need to question what others are doing we can simple go onto Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and get updated statuses every ten minutes. Every answer to every question or debate can be solved by simply searching the answer on the internet. We no longer need to store information in our minds like we used to most of the answers are available right at our fingertips. Quickly the old way of doing and learning is becoming obsolete. People don’t need to know how to add and subtract, chances are we have a calculator on our phones. The over abundance of internet communication makes it obvious how our generation is becoming more dependent on technology to speak for us. When put into a situation where we must speak face to face and communicate functionally we simply fall apart. The lack of human interaction is truly making us suffer when it comings to forming relationships in everyday life. People no longer speak their opinion, answer the question, or openly discuss topics. It is much easier to simply blog or post your opinion. We hide behind our technology, it is so much easier to confront someone or speak hateful words when they are not standing right in front of you. It is that false sense of security we carry with us, the internet is a safe haven and everything hurts less when we don’t hear others speak, see the emotions in their face, the power of an opinion attached to a feeling breathing human. In all honesty it is incredibly crippling, it’s hard to look someone in the eye, we tend to stay silent and avoid the confrontation. With this new power at our hands everything has changed. Even though I am part of this technology generation, I know not how we are going to solve this new gap we have created. I am guessing when we are the ones with the power and calling the shots technology will be king. Everyone will be connected; we will have chips planted in our brains and the internet as a part of who we are. We will further disconnect from human interactions and the way we are taught and deal with situations will no longer be head on. I almost make it sound like this will be our downfall and I am sure in the past people have looked at other advances in technology in horror but it truly does feel like this is the start of a powerful force. It was farming and fridges that allowed us to stay in one place and settle. Our curiosity and sense of adventure that led us to new worlds and discover the unknown. Medications that allow us to live way past our prime. Here we are now, we are living in a time of terrifying but amazing change that will greatly alter how we live today. We are an awkward transition generation, where people look on us like strange lost creatures with no functionality or hope but eventually things will change and the generation of technology will truly be the norm.
